As we begin this new year according to our calendar, I was asking the Lord what was on His heart for us, we who are called by His name; and He reminded me of this:
He has shown you, O man, what is good.
And what does the Lord require of you?
To act justly and to love mercy
and to walk humbly with your God. [Micah 6:8]
He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them His way. [Ps 25:9]
He gives grace to the humble but opposes the proud. [Prov 3:34; Jas 4:6]
He esteems the person who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at His Word. [Isaiah 66:2]
Jesus is our model. So to walk with Him, we must become more like Him and as we walk with Him, we will become more like Him.
Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. [Matt 11:29]
Our attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus. He took the very attitude of a servant, humbled Himself and became obedient even to death on a cross.
[Read Philippians 2:1-11]
So it’s our choice if we want to walk with Him, and be known by Him, as His friend, we must humble ourselves, as a child. [Matt 18:4]. He will then lift us up in due time [James 4:10; 1Peter 5:6]
Mother Teresa, in The Joy in Loving: A Guide to Daily Living, listed a few ways we can practice humility:
- To speak as little as possible of one's self.
- To mind one's own business.
- Not to want to manage other people's affairs.
- To avoid curiosity.
- To accept contradictions and correction cheerfully.
- To pass over the mistakes of others.
- To accept insults and injuries.
- To accept being slighted, forgotten and disliked.
- To be kind and gentle even under provocation.
- Never to stand on one's dignity.
- To choose always the hardest.
Humility is being known for who we really are, pride is trying to be someone we're not — in God’s eyes; God sees our heart.
My Peter, the editor, will be back with you next month. His physical heart is only functioning at 32% but we’re believing for it to function at 60% with God’s touch, and the doctor’s wisdom over these next couple of months, if not before. Please agree with us in prayer, we want to finish the race well. [2Tim 4:7-8]
AussiePete, Laurie and Ruthie Worrall, our faithful layout and co-editors are off Down Under for five weeks to celebrate Pete’s mother’s 90th birthday. His parents were missionaries in Papua New Guinea, where he was born.
We finish off with this prayer for you . . .
“May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all.” [2Cor 13:14]
With Love & Blessings for this coming year of 2015,
and the YWAM Associates International staff
P.S. You may be thinking, Donna, you're using a lot of scripture references! Just remember the Word with the Spirit brings life and peace. It is application of the Word that helps us to mature.
